The Aviation Program at 714 Squadron introduces cadets to the exciting world of flight. It covers the science behind flying, how aircraft operate, and the basics of navigation and meteorology — all while sparking interest in potential careers in aviation.
Principles of flight: lift, thrust, drag, and gravity
Parts of an aircraft and how they work together
Navigation basics: maps, compasses, and airspace
Weather systems and their impact on flying
Air traffic control and radio communications
Careers in aviation: pilots, air traffic controllers, aviation technicians, and more
Senior cadets can participate in Ground School, a preparatory course for cadets interested in earning their Glider or Power Pilot Licence. Ground School covers key topics such as:
Air law and regulations
Theory of flight
Meteorology
Navigation and flight operations
Ground School is an excellent first step toward applying for summer pilot training courses fully funded by the Cadet Program.
The Aerospace Program explores the wonders of space, rocketry, and technology beyond Earth. Cadets learn how Canada has contributed to space exploration and discover the science that makes space missions possible.
The history of space travel and modern missions
Rocketry fundamentals and orbital mechanics
Satellites and space stations
The solar system, stars, and galaxies
Canadian space contributions (e.g., Canadarm, Chris Hadfield, and the CSA)
Space science careers: astronauts, engineers, astrophysicists, and more
Cadets engage in fun, hands-on activities such as:
Model rocket construction
Space trivia competitions and design challenges
Virtual tours of aerospace facilities
Simulations and videos related to life in space
The Aerospace Program encourages curiosity and supports the development of science, technology, and problem-solving skills.
The Gliding Program is one of the most unique and exciting opportunities available to Air Cadets. It gives cadets real hands-on flying experience in Schweizer 2-33 gliders, supervised by licensed Cadet Instructor Pilots and staff from the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program and Canadian Armed Forces.
Familiarization Flights (Glider and Powered)
Offered in the spring and fall, these are short flights that introduce cadets to basic flight principles while flying in a glider or tow aircraft.
Ground School
Senior cadets interested in pursuing their Glider Pilot Licence must complete Ground School training. This covers:
Theory of flight
Meteorology
Air law and navigation
Flight operations and human factors
Qualified cadets may apply for:
Glider Pilot Training Course (GPTC)
A 6-week summer course where cadets earn their Transport Canada Glider Pilot Licence.
Power Pilot Training Course (PPTC)
For those aged 17+, cadets can train to earn their Private Pilot Licence in a powered aircraft.
These are fully funded, high-level training opportunities open to motivated cadets who demonstrate strong leadership, knowledge, and maturity.
