FTXs are weekend camps held in forested areas or wilderness settings. Cadets sleep in tents or shelters they build themselves and apply what they've learned in a fun and challenging environment. These exercises promote teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
Cadets will be given a kit list before each survival exercise. They are expected to wear appropriate field training uniforms and bring personal items such as:
Sleeping bag
Flashlight/headlamp
Water bottle
Personal hygiene supplies
Rain gear and layers for various weather conditions
All safety gear and group equipment (e.g., tarps, stoves, and cooking supplies) are provided by the squadron.
Aircrew Survival is one of the most exciting and hands-on parts of the Air Cadet Program. It prepares cadets to survive in the wilderness using basic skills and knowledge that any aircrew member would need in an emergency.
At 714 Squadron, cadets participate in Field Training Exercises (FTXs) throughout the year, where they learn to survive, work as a team, and build confidence in outdoor settings.
How to build improvised shelters
Fire-building techniques (with and without matches)
Outdoor cooking and food safety
Safe use of survival tools (e.g., knives and axes)
Water purification methods
Basic navigation with map and compass
First aid and emergency signaling
Wildlife awareness and environmental respect
Cadets who excel in survival training may be selected for:
Introduction to Survival Course (2 weeks)
Survival Instructor Course (4 weeks)
These courses offer more advanced instruction and can lead to opportunities to teach junior cadets in future years.
